About this blog

Cuba can be exasperating, mysterious, overwhelming, but always full of wonders. Whether you have one day, a week, a month or a year to spend in Cuba, count yourself lucky. You will make new discoveries every day about the people, the culture, the language, and the nature of this largest of Caribbean islands.

This website includes my reflections on the crazy, spectacular beauty that is Cuba. I have visited the island many times since 2002, lived there for a whole year, and seen many changes. There are always revelations – “Aha!” moments  – when things became clearer and better understood, about the people, the history, the culture, the country – and me.

Everyone who encounters Cubans and Cuba will have their own experiences, impressions and their own understanding of the place. It´s not simple. These posts capture some of my impressions of Cuba today, and the changes that are underway.

The result of being isolated from much of the western world and its influences for more than 50 years is that Cuba has retained and values its “cubanness” (cubanidad). For the tourist it is the safest place to travel in Latin America, if not the World. Cuban people welcome visitors and make you feel part of the family. Take a deep breath, prepare yourself, and enjoy all that Cuba has to offer.

Beautiful old US cars

US cars from the 40s and 50s are one of the best means of transport in Havana.
